Louis Lake is located in the Shoshone National Forest near the Popo Agie Wilderness Area just 28 miles from Lander, Wyoming.

The fishing is tremendous, the scenery is breathtaking and the adventure never ends! At any one time there are thousands of visitors crowding other areas of Wyoming's beautiful mountains. The closest lodging facility to Louis Lake is 12 miles away! The closest town, Lander, is 28 miles away!

The Continental Divide Winter Trail passes directly in front of Louis Lake Lodge. There are approximately 100 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the immediate area. The groomed CDWT runs from Louis Lake to Yellowstone. Go to CDWT map

Driving Directions:

NOTE:  Summer  2008 - Construction will continue on RD 131 from Sinks Canyon at Bruce's Parking to the Worthen Reservoir turn off.   The switch back section of this road will be CLOSED until July 1st.  After that it will only open for two hours in the morning and two hours in the early evening.  We recommend using Highway 28, South Pass, to access the Louis Lake recreation areas.  (This construction will NOT affect snowmobile access.) 

  • From Rock Springs go north on highway 191 for 40 miles to Farson. Get an ice cream and more gas in Farson. Turn right onto highway 28, toward Lander, and go 45 miles to the "Loop Road" on the left. (Watch for Louis Lake sign at mile marker 45.) Then only 10 more miles on the dirt "Loop Road".
  • From Rawlins go north on highway 287 / 789 for 45 miles to Muddy Gap junction. Stay on 287 / 789 left toward Jeffrey City . Go left on highway 28 for 15 miles till you see Louis Lake signs at mile marker 45. Turn right on the dirt "Loop Road" for 10 miles.
  • From Casper go west on highway 220 for 75 miles to Muddy Gap junction. Turn right onto highway 287 / 789 toward Jeffrey City. Go left on highway 28, toward Farson, for 15 miles till you see Louis Lake signs at mile marker 45. Turn right on the dirt "Loop Road" for 10 miles.
  • From Jackson go southeast on 287 for 130 miles to Lander. In downtown Lander turn right or south (5th or 6th street) toward "Sinks" Canyon on state road 131. Stop by the Sinks canyon visitor's center, it's worth it! This road will eventually turn into the dirt "Loop Road" and bring you to Louis Lake. (25 miles total with switchbacks.)   SEE NOTE ABOVE
  • From Kemmerer go north on highway 189 for 30 miles. Turn right onto state road 372 for 25 miles. Turn left onto state road 28 toward Farson, which is 30 more miles. Get an ice cream and more gas in Farson. Stay on 28, toward Lander, for another 45 miles to the dirt "Loop Road" on the left. (Watch for Louis Lake sign at mile marker 45.) Then only 10 miles on the dirt "Loop Road".
  • The less traveled path from Evanston. From interstate 80 take highway 372 north at exit # 83, the LaBarge Road which is 15 miles east of Little America . Follow 372 north for 27 miles till you see highway 28 to the right. Take highway 28 toward Farson, which is only 30 miles. Get an ice cream and more gas in Farson. Stay on 28, toward Lander, for another 45 miles to the "Loop Road" on the left. (Watch for Louis Lake sign at mile marker 45.) Then only 10 miles on the dirt "Loop Road".

Surrounding Area

There are three Forest Service campgrounds along the Loop Road. One on the south end of Louis Lake, another about six miles down the Loop Road on the west side of Fiddlers Lake, and one at Worthen Reservoir. These campgrounds have primitive facilities and limited space. Charges are $8 per night. Other facilities are 30 miles to the north in Sinks Canyon.

Popular backpacking sites are located at Christina Lake, which trail head begins at Louis Lake Lodge. Christina Lake is a natural lake that was enlarged during the 1880's. Located 5 miles from Louis Lake at 9,800'. Christian Lake is approximately 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. Nature at it's best up there - wonderful fishing and scenery.
